Main technical parameters (BS 476-6 horizontal flammability tester)
3.1 Instrument composition (BS 476-6): composed of combustion chamber, sample holder, and electronic control part;
3.2 Combustion chamber : Contains a horizontal gas burner and two electric heating elements, and consists of a detachable steel chimney and fairing. The internal dimensions of the combustion chamber are 190 mm X 190 mm X 90 mm. The chamber wall has a 1 cm thick calcium silicate board. There is a 96mm*25mm air inlet and a 50mm*50mm mica viewing window in front of the combustion chamber. The sample base is fixed behind the combustion chamber. There are gas lamps and 4 electric heating elements in the room. There is a chimney and a movable cap at the top.
3.3 Sample holder: A square-shaped sample holder made of calcium silicate board with a width of 22 mm and a thickness of 12.5 mm. The outer edge size is 265 mm * 265 mm and the inner edge size is 225 mm * 225 mm. Each of the four corners has a circular hole with a diameter of 8 mm. There is a stainless steel rod extending horizontally at each of the four corners of the combustion chamber, with a diameter of 8 mm. Insert into the round hole at the four corners of the sample holder. There are four round holes with a diameter of 4mm at the front end of the stainless steel rod. The sample holder, calibration plate or sample, non-combustion backing, calcium silicate back plate can be used with spring and metal pins. It is fixed behind the combustion chamber. Calcium silicate backing plate size: 265 mm * 265 mm * 20 mm, round holes with a diameter of 8 mm at the four corners. A asbestos cloth is used as a gasket between the sample holder and the rear wall of the combustion chamber.
3.4 Chimney and cap: The chimney is 190mm long and is made of low carbon steel pipe with a thickness of 1mm and a diameter of 38mm. The detachable steel cap is 152mm high and is made of low carbon steel pipe with a thickness of 1mm and a diameter of 76mm.
3.5 Gas lamp: The gas lamp consists of a horizontal steel pipe. The wall thickness is 1.5mm, the ends are closed, and the diameter is 9mm. There are 14 small holes in the horizontal direction of the lamp, the whole diameter is 1.5mm, and the center interval is 12.5mm. The wall of the lamp is 15mm from the bottom of the combustion chamber and 25mm away from the sample. The gas nozzle is a welding torch for gas welding, each with a gas regulating valve and an air regulating valve.
3.6 Heating elements (BS 476-6): The four heating elements are divided into two groups, which are fixed horizontally above the combustion chamber. Two heating elements per group, 6 mm apart, 25 mm apart between the two groups Each heating elements has a length of 300mm, an outer diameter of 20mm and a power of 500W. The heating element and equipment frame should have a grounding device.
3.7 Thermocouple: two thermocouples, the installation site is shown below.

Frequently Asked Questions:-
What is BS 476?
BS 476 refers to the British standard for fire tests on building materials and structures. This test standard is split into two parts: Part 6 and Part 7. Part 7 specifies the test method for measuring the lateral spread of flame along the surface of a test specimen.
What is fire propagation index?
a fire propagation index, that provides a comparative measure of the contribution to the growth of fire made by an essentially flat material, composite or assembly. It is primarily intended for the assessment of the performance of internal wall and ceiling linings.
